Hutt Lagoon, in the Perth Basin, Western Australia is a shallow (< 11 m) evaporitic basin, developed as a result of ponding in a Pleistocene calcreted dune terrain. Holocene sequence in the lagoon reflects a history of evaporite sedimentation through successive stages ranging from open marine to pond and playa environments. The contemporary lagoon is a playa surface in which sedimentation is related to distribution and interaction of hydrologic units (groundwaters, seawaters and lagoonal brines). Precipitation is restricted to ephemeral halite in ponded waters, and diagentic emplacement of CaCO sub(3) and CaSO sub(4) minerals in lagoonal sediments. Playa surfaces, predominantly below sea-level, fundamentally control the lagoonal circulation system;... |

The present taxonomic revision of Harpullia was started by the second author as the main part of her work for a M. Sc. in biology at Leiden University. She concentrated on a revision of the species occurring in New Guinea, paid only a more superficial attention to the rest of the genus. The first author supervised her work, completed it, and worked it up for publication. It is hoped that this taxonomic revision will be followed by two more papers, one on the pollen-morphology by Dr. J. Muller, secondly one on the systematics of the genus by the first author of the present paper. The system that will probably emanate from the last named paper is already used in the present one and, accordingly, will be sketched here. The genus is, as with Radlkofer... |

The present study deals with the taxonomy of a family of the brown algal order Sphacelariales in Europe. The taxonomy of this order is much influenced by the works of Sauvageau as published between 1900 and 1914. A short survey of the work on Spacelariales by him and his phycological predecessors is given in the introduction. The order Sphacelariales is described and its nomenclatural history is given. Other paragraphs deal with distribution, morphology and the used descriptive terminology, ecology, variability and culture studies, reproduction and life-history, systematic position and classification. In the notes on morphology the history of the descriptive terminology is incorporated, as well as discussions on the correct use of this terminology. Most... |
